Birdwatching or birding is a wonderful way to connect with nature. There are so many birds around us and each one has a different story.

Here at YCN we have been celebrating our local birdlife on Birding Discovery Days for many years. Encouraged by our guests we have now added birdwatching classes to our existing programme. So here it is, our new Birdwatching for Beginners course, designed specifically for anyone wishing to learn how to start birdwatching.

Based in York the course will be 8 sessions over 8 weeks - in the classroom and out in the field. We have all realised the value and joy of being in nature, particularly over the past 2 years. If this has sparked an interest in the natural world around you, and you want to learn more, come and join us. There’s so much to explore.

All you need is curiosity, enthusiasm and a good pair of shoes!

What you can expect on the Birdwatching for Beginners Course:

A small group of 8 - this creates great opportunities to interact with your teacher/guide

Professional, local, expert teacher with a lifetime of birding knowledge

A learning environment where everyone is involved and has fun

Course materials including a YCN birding notebook

If you need a pair of binoculars, we will have a pair for you to use on the course

YCN will make a 5% donation to a local bird conservation project from the income of this course. Your booking makes a real difference for wildlife!

We will be running two concurrent courses starting in April 2022. We have a daytime course for beginners and, for those of you who may have attended one of our previous courses or have knowledge already we have designed an intermediate level course.

April – May 2023 Course Details – Beginners and Intermediate Levels – Two Separate Courses

Who is the course for?

This 8-week course is for beginner and intermediate level Birdwatchers; those of you who have developed a curiosity about the

birds you see in your garden or your local park, and want to know more.

It is designed to give you a better understanding of a variety of birds and their chosen habitats. The course will give you

confidence in how to spot and identify them, and a greater understanding of the resources that exist to help you pursue this

interest on your own. Who knows, you may even get hooked!

Who will be teaching me?

The course will include both indoor sessions, learning the basic skills and longer, outdoor sessions where you can put your new

found knowledge and skills into practice. Our expert tutor Margaret Boyd will provide you with all the guidance you need.

Margaret is a qualified teacher who started birding at a very young age. She has been sharing her passion for the subject as one

of the YCN guiding team for many years. You can see Margaret’s profile here.

What will I learn?

The course will cover:

? Bird identification skills

? How to find birds in a variety of habitats

? Fieldcraft – top tips that you won’t find in books

? Equipment - and how to use it

? Parts of a bird – their topography

? Bird sounds

? How to use resources such as field guides

? An introduction to bird conservation

How big is the group?

At Yorkshire Coast Nature we want to give you the best experience possible, so all our wildlife trips are run in small groups. This

course is no exception. Our maximum group size will be 8. This guarantees that you will have a good birding experience both in

the classroom and outside ‘in the field’.

When are the sessions?

We will be running two concurrent courses starting in July - exactly the same content but at different times of the day. We have

a daytime only course and, for those of you with work or other commitments, we are running an evening classroom session with

field visits on alternate weekends. You can see the dates and times in the table below.

was the headline. Guardian journalist Kevin Rushby was clearly having a great time!

The advantage of having Baines around was becoming clear: the man is a bird-identification demon. Nothing escaped his eye: great skua, arctic skua, long-tailed skua, manx shearwater, razorbill. For Baxter, though, the birds had added value. “They will lead us to the whales. If there’s a ball of herring, it attracts the birds.”

Best Tourism Stand British Birdwatching Fair

In 2015 we won third place in the best tourism stand awards at the British Birdwatching Fair. Steve and I were chuffed as the say in Yorkshire! especially as this was our first year. then it kept getting better.

In 2018 we were triple chuffed! We won FIRST PLACE! cue big hugs and Yorkshire tea to celebrate...

Wildlife & Birdwatching

The Yorkshire Coast, North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Wolds are amazing places for wildlife with many diverse habitats and spectacular scenery. YCN's top-class wildlife safaris are led by local experts in a small group environment allowing time for everyone to learn and ensuring pressure on wildlife is kept to a minimum. From snakes on the moors, birds of prey and butterflies in the hidden depths of the Great Yorkshire Forest to rare migrant birds at the sandy beaches of Spurn Point and rocky cliffs of Filey, Flamborough and Bempton.
